Sudama and Lord Krishna were childhood friends who were together in school called “Gurukul” those days. Years passed by and Sudama lived in poverty, whereas Lord Krishna was he king of Dwarka.. One day, Sudama’s wife asked him to meet Krishna, Lord of Dwaraka and ask for help.
Sudama was not keen on asking for Krishna’s help, but decided to meet his old classmate. He wanted to take some gift but there was nothing in the house, so his wife gave him a small bundle of Rice and asked him to offer it to Lord Krishna. After a long journey Sudama reached Krishna's palace and was reluctant to enter the palace, when Lord Krishna came running bare footed to meet him and embraced his long lost friend. He washed his feet with his own hands and gave him all the comforts of life. He pulled the bundle of rice from his hesitating hands and started eating them very tastefully. He said "Even the most expensive gift offered to me without devotion and true love has no importance to me, as compared to the smallest gift given to me with true love and affection".
Sudama returned home the next morning to see that his old hut had been replaced by a large palace. His wife came out to welcome him dressed in silken clothes and gold jewellery. It was all with the blessing of Lord Krishna.
